How Far Apart Discs For Garden Hiller

  1. Disc row builder/hiller

  2. Re: Disc row builder/hiller

After welding I put down a quick coat of green paint. Monday I'll make the clamps to hold the discs. If I'm lucky I can try it out on Monday.

Interestingly, my friend Don came down and ran his metal detector over my garden. He found a lot of nails, junk, and a handful of coins. Most were modern but one was a silver 1938 Mexican Peso that was shot. No gold coins but pretty neat anyway. Now in addition to the deer raiding my garden... I'll have to watch for treasure hunters.

Everything you do is above my standard - so I can ask questions . . .

How much weld on a plow-bar?

Vertical or Horizontal only - all the way around - single or both-side?

Nice, I saw a JD one years ago and the tool bar was SOLID ! They had a variety of devices as options for it.

Forhire, very nice work! would you mind posting a picture of your press? I notice the threaded leg on the ram, looks like a great setup.

  7. Re: Disc row builder/hiller

Excellent work. What kind of disks did you order? I replaced the disks on my Miller two years ago and have been selling the used ones at scrap price. They are worn down to 20-21" diameter (new are 24"). I still have a dozen or so left.

  8. Re: Disc row builder/hiller

    That looks great!
I put one together using the same parts and it works pretty well.
I've seen a few set-ups that also run a cultivator shank behind each tire to break up compaction and some folks have them set up to hill, roll out the weed block, then turn a bit of soil over the edge of the barrier.
I have the R4 tires on my machine and they have a wide footprint so it feels like I can't put the hills as close together as I might like to...
Better get out in the garden: we're having great weather and an early start to the growing season!

Dang, already making money on your garden! What size JD tractor is that? Looks big enough that they could have put Cat 2 arms on it.

Yeah, most cultivator bars are solid. I'm modelling this off some I've seen online and they all use tube. If I pretzel it... I'll make a new one.

It's a Jet 35 ton. I picked it up several years ago off CL. Worth every penny. This is a picture of a new one.

I looked all over for some scrap discs. All I could find were coulters. Nobody stocks this stuff locally. This is what I bought. $33 each. 16 In. Disc Hiller with 22 In. Shank, Blanton Style Hub. http://www.agrisupply.com/disc-hille...style/p/31752/

Good to know. I know I'm getting a late start but the soil is just now warm enough to plant the corn. I might still meet my June 1st goal.

Yup getting rich micro-farming. Good eye. I don't own a tractor. This is one I borrowed and it just happened to be a bigger than needed. This is the JD 5425 that I've had in the shop to fix the shuttle drive. This is a Cat 2 machine but I opted to build for Cat 1 because I sometimes borrow a smaller Kubota.

With the way the square tubing is mounted to the top link mount using just the two hitch pins, is there any concern that it might want to rotate like a hinge?

Hard to see from the photos. Top link arms are welded to the lower pin ears. I wanted to give the pins some more bite so that is why I opted for this design. Never built anything like this so I hope it works.

Because I was cheap... I didn't order cultivator clamps. Anyone have any good ideas? I need to mount the disc on the bar... I was thinking u-bolts and a tube welded to flat plate.

  14. Re: Disc row builder/hiller

I just went to a local Agrisupply store for the first time. Do they ever have stuff! Never seen so many lawn mower blades in my life. Picked up some spring shackles to make one of those helping hand weld positioners that someone here made. $1.69 a pair.

  15. Re: Disc row builder/hiller

This isn't big ag country around here but the local strawberry guys use pretty neat row builders. Double disc and each side and a drag or small blade in the center to flatten the row a bit. The soil has to be worked up pretty soft before they can pull it off tho. They move along pretty good when they're doing it.

Depends on what you have for disc parts. Some weld a plate to both tubes and bolt the plates together and some use u-bolts or long bolts and plates top and bottom. Both ways seem to work fine in farm machinery. This is a friends disc and you can see it uses flat bars top and bottom with bolt to clamp it.

This is done to allow changing the angle of the disc gang to meet the needs of each job. It will be a good idea to allow for that in your build if you can because different soils and the speed that you pull it will change how much dirt it moves.

Yeah, I know, but it'll be ok!

I got my second planting of corn in last week and they're poking up now!
We're in the cascade foothills so I usually gauge when to plant by when the farmers starting working their
fields in the valley then I plant a week later.
With the mild winter, I put mine in a week before them...we'll see how it turns out.
You're welcome to borrow my Earthway seedercouldn't get it to you until Tuesday.
    Keep the pics coming.

I have a heavy 16"x 6' double gang disc that I just reverse the disc gangs on to go from normal discing to mounding. Leaves about 30" between rows in mounding mode.

Killjoy, prepare to be shocked! After I read your post I was worried. Despite heavy last night rain and the ground being a bit soft I decided to widen the stance and cut some rows in the tire tracks to see how it holds up. No movement. Worked great. I'm amazed how fast I can roll through and the depth I'm getting. My plan once it drys out is to move them in and run it over again. I saw some blue sky when I started but was rained on while working. I don't know if the photo does it justice... considering I've done my rows with a shovel this is great. What took 20 or 30 minutes (including adjustments) took me a week in years pasts.
